Primary Prevention using
Prime for life 4.5 hour syllabus

Prime For Life is available as a primary prevention tool which can be implemented with a universal group who may not be making high risk choices but would like to learn how to prevent alcohol and other drug problems and protect the things they value.
About the 4.5 hour Prime For Life programme.
Preventing problems before they occur
Prime for life 4.5 hour version offers an opportunity for participants to develop an evidence based understanding of alcohol and other drug principles and and to critically analyse common myths which can lead to harm occurring.
Prime for life has been developed by utilizing more than 20 years of research that helps us to understand how alcohol and other drug problems can occur and more importantly how they can be avoided in the future.

Opportunity to learn instead of lecturing
Prime for life does not lecture participants on alcohol and other drug harms. Instead, the programme is delivered in an interactive way to engage participants.
The delivery is information rich and in order to help the research evidence to be accessible to the participants in involves some presentation by the facilitator with lots of animations and video content which helps explain some of the research and concepts while reinforcing the key learning points.
Every participant receives a manual within which reflective exercises assist them to personalise aspects of the programme which again reinforces the key learning points.
Knowledge is Power
We hear many things about alcohol and other drugs through various media outlets, generally in terms of popular culture and sometimes via direct marketing on social media. We also speak to our friends and others to try and inform ourselves. It can be very difficult to figure out what is true and what is not.
Prime for life offers people an opportunity to explore the actual facts using research evidence which leads to an increase in participants perception of risk when it comes to alcohol and other drug choices.
Risk Perception
The information we are given with regard to avoiding alcohol and other drugs risks is often ambivalent and sometimes non-existent. How often have we been told to "drink responsibly" or "moderately", "sensibly" and so on. Those words are specifically chosen because they are ambivalent. In other words the message can be understood in many ways by many different people therefore it does not give clear guidance to anyone. Prime for life uses quality research, delivered in an accessible way to help participants to understand when and how high risk alcohol and other drug use leads to problems. This helps participants to re calibrate their perceptions of alcohol and other drug use harms.
Protecting the things we value
Prime for life does not use scare tactics, nor does it try to convince people to live in a certain way. Instead Prime for life helps people to identify what are the most important things in their lives (their values) and how high risk alcohol and other drug choices can negatively impact those values. The values commonly identified include family, career, education, freedom etc. Prime for life harnesses this motivation to protect the things most important to us and uses that motivation to promote low risk choices.
Remote delivery
Covid 19 prompted us to using remote delivery of Prime for life using the Zoom platform. For us, like with other organisations, this meant we had to make big adjustments and we wondered how these changes would affect our participants experience. Feedback from our participants has been so positive that we continue to offer Prime for life via zoom. Feedback includes "I have no transport so could not attend in person", "I find it easier to click on a link than to walk into a room", "Being remote meant that I felt it was easier to engage as I didn't feel under scrutiny".
That being said, Prime for life can be delivered in-person on request.
Please contact us to discuss how we can assist you in delivering Prime for life to your organisation.
